EXTRA JUDICIAL KILLING: WE DEMAND FOR JUSTICE

October 4, 2015

The Inspector General of Police
Force Headquarter
Abuja

Sir,

EXTRA JUDICIAL KILLING: WE DEMAND JUSTICE FOR THE FAMILY OF SLAIN MRS IDONGESIT GODWIN

Our attention has been drawn to the murder of a 34 year old mother of four, late Mrs Idongesit Godwin hence our interest in the case. According to information available to us from eye witnesses account, the late Idongesit was shot dead by Corporal MUSELIU AREMU while seeking a bribe from the husband of the deceased.

On Wednesday September 16, 2015, Mr. Godwin John, a tricycle operator carrying his family returning to his house in Ijegun area of Lagos State was stopped by an illegal road block mounted by four Policemen Sgt. Benson Ababom, Corporal Telemundu Augustine, Corporal Onu Samuel and the blood thirsty Corporal Museliu Aremu. When they demanded for bribe before he can pass, Mr.Godwin pleaded that he was not on duty but just pick his family back home. When the wife Idongesit with her eleven year old kid were stepping down to plead with the officers, the said killer cop Corporal Aremu has already pulled the trigger killing Idongesit at the spot who fell on top of her eleven month old child while the bullet pierced the jaw of the husband and he became unconscious.

The antecedents of the four Policemen are said to be encouraged by their DPO, CSP Kenneth Egbo and Area Commander, ACP Akika Austine. Though the Police authority in Lagos has paid for the resuscitation of Mr.Godwin and the Corporal being detained and finally released, we therefore demand for the following:

1. We demand N50 million as compensation from the Police authority to the family of the slain Mrs. Idongesit to enable the husband cater for the four kids which she has left behind with a sick husband.

2. We demand for the immediate dismissal of Corporal Museliu Aremu from the service of Nigeria Police while the three accomplices, DPO and Area Commander should be on suspension for six months without salary to serve as deterrent to other defiant officers.

3. We strongly appeal to the Inspector General of Police to have a Police Crack Team in every state in the federation to monitor the activities of illegal road blocks which has resurface in violation of the Inspector General directives that such should be dismantle across the country. The fight against corruption is not only targeted at politicians alone but all institutions of government which the police is no exemption. The fight against corruption must be holistic and it involves everyone.

We plead with the Inspector General to act accordingly as we will do everything within our reach to ensure that justice is done to the family of the slain Idongesit Godwin. The children of the deceased are crying for justice and Nigerians are also demanding for justice.

On a final note, we want to thank the women right activist, Dr. DrJoe Okei Odumakin who has been on this case from day one and raise the awareness with a hashtag #justice4idonesit ,we will join hands with her to ensure that at last justice is done.

Signed

SEND A STRONG MESSAGE TO WORLD LEADERS ON EARLY CHILD EDUCATION

In three weeks, world leaders will gather in Oslo and will have an opportunity to publicly commit to the creation of a Global Humanitarian Fund and Platform for Education in Emergencies to guarantee that millions of children affected by war and natural disasters can have a safe place to play and continue learning. These leaders have the power to change the lives of children who’ve already survived some of the toughest childhoods imaginable. But without public noise, some leaders may forget these children  - or delay it for so long it loses any meaning. Can you share the message that NOW is the time for decisive action on education in emergencies? It’s no surprise that when a crisis occurs, children are the most vulnerable. But what many people don’t understand is that education doesn’t just equip children for the future — it protects them in the present. Children in school are less likely be trafficked, forced int...
